Adoption: Gathering Materials
The first step of God weaving a tapestry out of our lives is us recognizing we are His children and understanding elements of God’s nature. God is a holy God. There is no wickedness or unholiness in Him (Psalm 92:15). He does not bring temptation or sin into our lives (James 1:13). We have free will, and when we are tempted to sin, we can choose the direction for our lives. Will we choose righteousness or sinfulness? When God’s primary plan—His prosperous plan discussed in Jeremiah 29:11—is interrupted, He has an alternate plan waiting to ensure that the tapestry He designed for our lives will be completed. Even if the situation is bad, even when we mess up and disobey our Father, He can work it out and weave events together for our good (Romans 8:28). This principle is also seen in Psalm 37:23-24.
Just as a tapestry has a pattern and a design, there comes a time when the master weaver will pronounce that the tapestry—the life—is finished. Whether doing a project, going on a journey, developing a life plan, or getting an education, we begin and end, start and stop somewhere. The very first scripture in the Word of God states, “In the beginning, God. . . .” God put in us the desire to have an understanding of the beginning and to sometimes look forward to the end.
Because we are finite creatures, we operate in beginnings and endings, especially when considering life. Our lives begin somewhere, at some time. Then, at some point in time, our lives will end. If we are fortunate to live long lives, we look back, reflect, and wonder if we did all we could have, if we used everything God put in us, and if we are leaving a legacy—something that will affect generations to come.
What will your legacy be? Will you give God full permission to weave a beautiful tapestry from your life? Or, will you resist His design and attempt to pursue your own? No matter how good you think your plans are, they will be far inferior to the Lord’s who planned your purpose before the earth's foundation (Ephesians 1:4-5).
