A Heart of Humility

The God of Israel, unlike the fake gods of this world, is truly alive. Unlike idols that vainly occupy space, the LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD’s throne is in heaven, His eyes see, His eyelids test the children of man (Psalm 11:4). God sees all the atrocities man does and He judges in perfect righteousness.

Habakkuk’s complaint was that a holy God would allow the evil of the Chaldeans as judgement against His covenant people – the people of Judah. However, God in great detail reveals that He does not give any evil a free pass. God judges all sinners. When a king pronounces his judgement, his subjects listen silently. Such is also the case with God. Habakkuk, who was quick to speak earlier (Habakkuk 1:1), is made to realise that before a holy God there is only one response for sinners – to remain silent. This was also Job’s response. When Job questioned God’s bitter providence, God humbled him with His answer so that Job finally said, “behold, I am of small account; what shall I answer you? I lay my hand on my mouth. (Job 40:4)”

The only appropriate response to God is a heart of humility in all circumstances. In times of sickness and health, in poverty and prosperity, in tribulation and celebration, we are to realise that the LORD is God and that we are but His wayward subjects who deserve nothing but condemnation (Romans 2:12). Yet, God is merciful towards us in Christ Jesus. The LORD shows favour to the humble (Proverbs 3:34). A proper understanding of our own sinful depravity in light of God’s infinite holiness reduces all our pride and causes us to truly appreciate the grace we have received. Therefore, let us humbly submit ourselves to God’s will in all circumstances.
