Daily Bible Reading, August 2022: God’s Renewing Word of Mercy and ForgivenessÖrnek
August 12
Introduction
Jacob and Esau are reunited in a joyful reunion. Jacob urges Esau to accept the gifts he offers and seeks to gain his brother’s favor. Esau proposes they travel together to Edom, but Jacob says he prefers to remain with his children and flocks. Esau goes on to Edom, Jacob travels to Sukkoth, and then arrives in Shechem in Canaan.
Scripture Reading
Genesis 33:1-20
Today’s Key Verse: Genesis 33:10
Jacob said, “…if I have gained your favor, accept my gift. To see your face is for me like seeing the face of God, now that you have been so friendly to me.”
Reflect
Jacob bows down to the ground seven times as he approaches his brother, an ancient act of showing honor and humility toward another. What thoughts might have been going through Jacob’s mind? How does Esau greet Jacob? Did Esau’s action surprise you? Why does Jacob urge Esau to accept his gift? Why does Jacob seek to gain his brother’s favor (verse 15)? In Hebrew, the word “gifts” can also mean “blessing.” This may be Jacob’s attempt to return at least a part of the “blessing” he had stolen from his brother (Genesis 27:1-40).
Pray
God of reconciliation, you welcome and receive me into your presence, offering me forgiveness whenever I have sinned. I thank and praise you for favoring me with your generous and abundant love and mercy. Amen.
Tomorrow’s Reading
Genesis 37:1-11: Joseph, one of Jacob’s sons, tells his father and brothers about his dreams.
