Truth In Integrity
God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble... Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up. - James 4:6-10
Pride destroys marriages. It’s that simple, and in a world where so much is directed against the institution of holy matrimony, being proud only makes your negative circumstances worse. Why? Because not only are you operating outside of a relationship with God, but you’ve set yourself in a direct path of God resisting you. Other translations for the word resists are opposes and frustrates. Do we really want to be in opposition to God or even frustrated by Him?
Walking in marital integrity means doing the right thing. Part of that requires being humble and contrite so you understand from a supernatural way what the right thing actually is. And just to be crystal clear, the right thing is defined by God and not your own wants. That would, again, be pride.
The truth about integrity is that there is no room for compromise. There is never a right time to do the wrong thing. Expecting your spouse or God to wink at your indiscretions is once again shedding the cloak of humility while strutting around in your own prideful nature. Nothing good has or will ever come from opposing God.
God loves you. God loves your spouse. God loves your marriage. That should be enough to humble the proudest person, but you have to be willing to submit yourself in humility. Sometimes it’s hard to do the right thing and that’s why integrity is the gold standard of personal behavior. Being humble enough to admit that in our own strength we cannot always be trusted to do the right thing is where God wants to bless us and as James says, “lift you up.”
Humility makes martial integrity a reality and being elevated by God once we’ve surrendered our sinful pride nature to Him is an incredible blessing to both husband and wife. Don’t be too proud to receive God’s blessings for your life and your relationship.
