Serving God and Others: Devotions From Time of GraceHalimbawa
Mentors
You’ve learned a lot of things from a lot of people, but some individuals stand out. You connected with them. Why? Whom has God sent into your life to lift you up, show you things, explain mysteries, model how to act, demonstrate how to succeed? Who released energy in your life, made you feel like a winner, raised the bar of your expectations?
More important, who have been your faith mentors? Who most vividly led you into the Word? Who modeled how to make God-pleasing decisions? Whose spiritual talk and actions do you find yourself imitating? Whom would you most want to be like? When confronted with a tough moral or ethical dilemma, whose name is in your thoughts at that moment: “What would _____ do?
It is no accident that these mentors are in your life. Be more aware of them--they are God’s gifts to you. “Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith” (Hebrews 13:7). Mentors put flesh and blood on abstract principles. Mentors distill life learning and pass on little bottles of it. They are happy to share what they know, because all good mentors had mentors of their own.
Do you suppose that there’s anybody trailing behind you who looks up to you?
