Introduction:

This introduction has been shortened for the Bible app

Galatians 1:10 says, “For am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”

It was once explained to me that sometimes the people who say the harshest remarks are the same people who may not see the weight in their words. Some people think so little of what they are saying that they will say whatever they want, completely unaware of the ripple effect of pain they have caused. It can stem from ignorance or insecurity that causes one to believe their words are meaningless. There is no need to say unkind things about others or even yourself, but the negativity comes from a place of brokenness. It can be hard to see it like this, but underneath all of that insecurity is a beautiful human being seeking worth in the only way they know. Maybe aggressive language was common in their family, or they think harsh criticism is the only way to create change. There could be a thousand reasons for the negativity so to put it simply, we cannot find our worth by getting or giving approval.

When Paul was writing our book verse he was under severe persecution. He stood for the love of Jesus and spoke out against a rule-based religion. Many people hated him for that and even threatened his life. However, he persevered knowing that his ultimate goal was not to be liked but to be a servant of Christ.

With the help of scripture, prayer, and counsel of those much wiser than me, we have the tools to fight the battle of insecurities. There will always be someone who does not like you, does not understand your methods, and lacks tolerance or love. Do not let their criticism turn you bitter but remind you of the love of Jesus you want to have for those around you and those who follow after you. Do not let the critics prevent you from pursuing your calling.

A good reputation and integrity are essential to living a godly life and are qualities we should strive to hold. Yet, when we become consumed with wanting to please others, that is where our perception grows dim. Constructive criticism can help push us to be the best we can be, but critical and jarring comments do not help life grow. It can stop people in their path and prevent them from following their purpose. To prevent this, we need to shift focus from seeking validation from others to seeking it from God.

Each chapter of this book focuses on a different “Bad Review” people face daily. You may not be at the start of your career, but although first-job jitters can go away, insecurities do not. Self-doubt can debilitate you until your last breath. This book is for anyone who has let their insecurities control them and decides today that the fear of what others say about them will no longer prevent them from achieving their God-given goals.
