Community Matters

By Pastor Celeste Gonzales

Confession time…I’m an introvert! You won’t catch me being the loudest person at the party, busting out the latest dance moves while everyone is watching, or seeking the stage. I’d rather be behind the scenes, one-on-one, listening instead of speaking.

So I’m embarrassed to say that when I hear the about the possibility of isolation, I daydream about serenity, good books, and countless hours of Netflix – until my dreams are interrupted by the reality that I have three kids to contend with!

I actually can’t go long without a meaningful conversation. As much as I long for some peace and rest, my need for intimate relationships quickly outweighs the blissful thoughts of being alone.

The truth is, there’s nothing more comforting than a familiar face in the midst of crisis. The ministry of presence is one that God calls every believer to, just as recorded in Galatians 6:2,  “Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.”

To be present for someone in a time of need says, “I see you.”

To be present and to serve someone in a time of need says, “I’m with you.”

To be present and to serve and to worship with someone in a time of need says we are bound together by the greatest act of love displayed on the cross, and there is nothing that we cannot overcome together!

Our best days are upon us and God has entrusted each one of us to create a strong community of believers who do not respond in fear when trouble comes our way but are securely grounded in the Word of God and develop even greater community through Small Groups.

This is not the time to shrink back, close the blinds and shut the garage door, it is the time to reach out as it says in Acts 2:46 to meet “from house to house, sharing their meals with gladness and sincerity of heart.”
