Listening With Intention

All day long we hear voices and sounds. Our ears receive constant stimulation. But when it comes to hearing others, are you listening or is what they are saying only noise? It is hard to listen with intention. It takes work to connect with others and truly listen. Oftentimes, it can be easier to turn conversations toward ourselves. We like to talk about what we have done or share our opinions and beliefs on a topic. When we are in a hurry or distracted, the noise intensifies. When talking with a person, how often do you pause and think about your reply? Or do you respond even before they finished speaking? We must learn to cut through the noise, listen intently, and relate to others well. This video offers practical steps on how to do this well.

The Bible says, “If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame” (Proverbs 18:13). In fact, the book of Proverbs talks often about listening to God and others. These wise sayings can help grow our wisdom and help our relationships flourish. When we talk with others, it is important to ask intentional questions and listen to what they share. You will learn about another person’s interests, beliefs, joys, and struggles. You may be surprised by what people are willing to share when they feel listened to. You will find things that you have in common and put others more at ease. These conversations will continue as you cut through the noise to hear what others have to say.
