Day 7 - Just OK is Not OK

My favorite commercial on television right now is for a certain cell phone carrier wanting to make sure that when it comes to our cellular service, “just ok is not ok.” A patient is lying in a hospital bed speaking to his nurse moments before being taken in for surgery. He asks the nurse if she’d ever worked with the surgeon, and she says, “Yeah, he’s ok.” That’s when the doctor bursts into the room shouting, “Guess who just got reinstated? Well, not officially.” Then, he looks at the patient and asks, “Nervous?” The patient hesitantly replies, “Yes.” Instead of easing the patient’s nerves, he flippantly says, “Yeah, me too. We’ll figure it out. I’ll see ya in there.” The mortified look on the patient’s face is priceless. I think we can all agree that just ok is not ok!

Years back, I wrote a song called “The Motions” that echoed a similar sentiment about my life. “Just ok is not enough.” I wrote the song in a season when I felt like I was just going through the motions in my spiritual life. My relationship with Christ had become more about checking boxes than it was about a passionate pursuit of a relationship with my Savior. I’ve learned over the years that my walk with Christ will definitely go through hills and valleys because of my human nature and the fact that, well, perfection just isn’t possible. What I have come to know is that God stays with us through every hill and valley. And His offering to us is consistent even when our faith walk is not. Life to the full. That’s the offer. Not a mediocre life. Not a so-so life. Not an OK life. A full life. A life that prospers and thrives. And ultimately, He offers us everlasting life.

Don’t settle for just OK. The God who stays with you sees where you are today but has big plans for where you’ll be tomorrow and the next day, and the day after that. As you read today’s Scriptures, ask God to show you the areas of your life where you’ve settled for ok, and make the choice to pursue the fullness of life that God has promised you.
