Introduction

Today’s reading begins with Samson returning to visit his wife, only to be told by her father that she had been given to one of Samson’s friends. Apparently the father thought Samson had intended to divorce his daughter when Samson left before the seven-day wedding feast was over. In anger, Samson burns the Philistine wheat fields. The Philistines attack the town of Lehi, and the men of Judah, seeking to avoid a confrontation with the Philistines, tie up Samson and plan to hand him over to the Philistines. But Samson breaks free and kills a thousand Philistine men with the jawbone of a donkey.

Today’s Scripture: Judges 15:14b

Suddenly the power of the LORD made him strong, and he broke the ropes around his arms and hands as if they were burnt thread.

Reflect

What vengeful act did the Philistines do after Samson burned their wheat fields? How did Samson defeat the Philistines? How did God provide for Samson after his victory over the Philistines? In what ways does God provide for you?

Pray

Gracious and loving God, whenever I am in distress, I know I can turn to you and you will lift my spirits and provide for my needs. With a humble heart I thank you for your everlasting care. Amen.
