Christ alone can free our conscience, and as we see in Hebrews, He does it so that we can serve God. In other words, a clean conscience leads to good works. But it doesn’t work in reverse — good works do not lead to a clean conscience. Nothing we do can remove real guilt, which is why self-forgiveness is pointless. When we are united to Christ by faith, the guilt of our sin is over and done with. The blessings of belonging to Him aren’t just for later, but for here and now.
