<<กุมารผู้ที่บังเกิดมาเป็นกษัตริย์ของชนชาติยิวนั้นอยู่ที่ไหน เราได้เห็นดาวของท่านปรากฏขึ้น เราจึงมาหวังจะนมัสการท่าน>> ครั้นกษัตริย์เฮโรดได้ยินดังนั้นแล้ว ก็วุ่นวายพระทัย ทั้งชาวกรุงเยรูซาเล็มก็พลอยวุ่นวายใจไปด้วย แล้วท่านให้ประชุมบรรดามหาปุโรหิตกับพวกธรรมาจารย์ของประชาชน ตรัสถามเขาว่า <<ผู้เป็นพระคริสต์นั้นจะบังเกิดแห่งใด>> เขาทูลว่า <<ที่บ้านเบธเลเฮมแคว้นยูเดีย เพราะว่าผู้เผยพระวจนะได้เขียนไว้ ดังนี้ว่า บ้านเบธเลเฮมในแผ่นดินยูเดีย จะเป็นบ้านเล็กน้อยที่สุด ในสายตาของบรรดาผู้ครอง แผ่นดินยูเดียก็หามิได้ เพราะว่าเจ้านายคนหนึ่งจะออกมา จากท่าน ผู้ซึ่งจะครอบครองอิสราเอล ชนชาติของเรา>> แล้วเฮโรดจึงเชิญพวกโหราจารย์เข้ามาเป็นการลับ ถามเขาได้ความถ้วนถี่ถึงเวลาที่ดาวนั้นได้ปรากฏขึ้น แล้วท่านได้ให้พวกโหราจารย์ไปยังบ้านเบธเลเฮมสั่งว่า <<จงไปค้นหากุมารนั้นเถิด เมื่อพบแล้วจงกลับมาแจ้งแก่เรา เพื่อเราจะได้ไปนมัสการท่านด้วย>> โหราจารย์เหล่านั้น จึงไปตามรับสั่ง และดาวซึ่งเขาได้เห็นเมื่อปรากฏขึ้นนั้นก็ได้นำหน้าเขาไป จนมาหยุดอยู่เหนือสถานที่ที่กุมารอยู่นั้น เมื่อพวกโหราจารย์ได้เห็นดาวนั้นแล้ว ก็มีความยินดียิ่งนัก ครั้นเข้าไปในเรือนก็พบกุมารกับนางมารีย์มารดา จึงกราบถวายนมัสการกุมารนั้น แล้วเปิดหีบหยิบทรัพย์ของเขา ออกมาถวายแก่กุมารเป็นเครื่องบรรณาการ คือ ทองคำ กำยาน และมดยอบ
