“Feel invincible”
Skillet
We live in a tense cultural climate. Most of us who believe in God have felt society’s resistance to our faith. For many Christians, this cultural push back to our most fundamental beliefs can intimidate us into living life from a place of fear rather than faith, and fear renders us ineffective in sharing and living out loud the Gospel.
So how do we respond to these fronts against our faith?
“When troubles seem near, God is nearer, and He’s ready to help. So why run and hide? No fear, no pacing, no biting fingernails. When the earth spins out of control, we are sure and fearless.” (Psalm 46:1-2)
The Psalmist doesn't write, “If”, but, “When” the world spins out of control. Whether we face threats of worldwide terror, corrupt governments, natural disasters or conflict at work or at home, chaos and confusion on earth are guaranteed. The world is broken and it shows. But the character of God is ready to redeem and rescue.
In 2 Corinthians, Jesus says, “My grace is enough … My power is made perfect through weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9) Simply put, when we are weak, God shines.
When I need to be saved
You're making me strong
You're making me stand
Never will fall
Never will end
There are Christians who live in regions of the world where their lives are in jeopardy every time they acknowledge Christ as their savior. They are living out this daily surrender to God through faith in Jesus – that though we may die physically, we are alive forever in the Spirit. Though we may not actually be invincible, with the eternal life of God beating in our hearts, we are indestructible. Within eternal perspectives, we can face spiritual resistance with complete assurance and fearlessness.
If not careful, especially here in America, the church can be lured into a skewed, “healthy, wealthy and blessed” version of the Gospel – a “Jesus is my homeboy and everything is going to be awesome” sect of theology that, frankly, is not Biblical. It sounds good. It feels good. And in a country where Christian beliefs were mainstream for so long, these ideas can be easy to buy, but it doesn’t prepare us for living in a culture where Jesus is no longer the popular norm.
We cannot rely on our surroundings, our circumstances, or our feelings to affirm our faith. But we can rely on God.
So what then is our response to these fronts against our faith? Though the earth spins out of control, we are sure and fearless.
