Creativity Is Good
Creativity feels good, doesn't it? But don't take my word for it. It’s a fact based on scientific evidence. Studies show that people who pursue creative endeavors experience more positive emotions, less anxiety, and an improved immune system. Both emotionally and physically, creativity helps us feel good.
When reimagining lives that feel empty and uncertain, it’s no wonder we want to see them differently. It feels good.
Creativity feeling good shouldn’t be surprising, though. As our Creator, God is creative. God created us in his image (Genesis 1:26-27) as his representatives here on earth. As his representatives, we’re called to emulate his character and actions observed throughout the Bible, including his creative nature.
Everything God created is not only inherently good; it’s good for us. That includes the creativity God established when he charged us to “be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; [and] have dominion.” (Genesis 1:28 NKJV). Completing this charge is a creative act and takes creativity. Therefore, creativity doesn’t just feel good; as an expression of our fruitfulness and productivity, creativity is good.
Since we’re created for “good works” (Ephesians 2:10 NKJV), and creativity is good work, get cracking! Get creating! Don’t ignore your gifts, talents, and skills. Use your imagination, thoughts, and ideas! Whatever your passion, don’t just ignite it. Let it blaze!
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank you for our creativity and the blessing it brings. And thank you for its goodness as we walk in it. Please give us the confidence to trust you with our creations. When we don’t feel like using our God-given creativity, please provide the strength and courage to overcome it, knowing we’ll feel better after. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
For Further Reflection:
In what ways do you see goodness in your creative pursuits? How is creativity good to you? How can you be more creative in reimagining your life?
Activity:
Spend ten to fifteen minutes doing something creative. Need some ideas? Draw, color, plan a party—in-person or virtual—plan your next vacation, explore, experiment, daydream, or simply use your imagination. When you’re done, see how you feel. Do you feel good?
Thought for the Day:
Creativity feels good because creativity is good.
