YOUR GUIDE THROUGH THE VALLEY

Are you in a valley right now, a season of loss or sorrow? Maybe it sometimes seems as though God Himself has abandoned you.

David knew all about valleys. When he was anointed to be king, he met immediate opposition from King Saul, who made it his life’s mission to kill David. For the next fifteen years, David became a fugitive. Even after David finally became king, his own son turned against him and tried to kill him. And once again the son of Jesse had to go into the wilderness, hunted like a wild animal.

But as David discovered, spiritual fruit doesn’t grow on mountaintops; it grows in valleys. Some of the most important lessons you’ll learn as a Christian will not come through the so-called good times. They’ll come through the hard times. But you can trust in God to be your guide every step of the way.

I love what David said in Psalm 23:4: “Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me.” He didn’t say, “Even when I collapse in the darkest valley,” or “Even when I crawl through the darkest valley.” David said, “I’m walking through this with my shepherd. I’m going to keep walking, and I’m not going to give up.”

You will get through this valley. Keep walking with your shepherd. That was what kept David going through all those grueling years on the run. He wasn’t alone. He had the best companion anyone could have in life or beyond life.

And so do you.

Maybe as you read these words, you need a second chance. One of David’s deepest valleys was when he committed adultery with Bathsheba. Yet when confronted with his sin, he admitted it and repented before God.

If your valley today is a result of your own sin, know that God is still your shepherd and guide. Run to Him. Tell Him everything. Accept His complete and total forgiveness. Our amazing Lord knows how to work the broken ends of our life stories into good, for His glory. As David wrote, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us” (Psalm 103:12).

Lord, even though I am walking through a valley, I will not be afraid, because You are beside me. Amen.
