Day 6: What Will You Pass Down?:
Sterling and Jean Miller knew their life wasn’t just about what they built—it was about the legacy they would pass down to their children and to those touched by their faith and ministry. Through all the joys and trials of their journey, they recognized the importance of instilling faith, perseverance, and hope into the next generation. Whether it was the church and school they founded or the lessons they taught their children through their own examples, the Millers understood that what they passed down would ripple through the lives of others for years to come.
Legacy isn’t about perfection; it’s about faithfulness. Sterling and Jean reminded their children and community that God’s promises are unshakable. As 2 Corinthians 1:20 declares, all of God’s promises are "Yes" in Christ, and through Him, we give glory to God. Passing down this assurance became central to their lives. They lived out their faith in both the triumphs and the trials, showing others what it meant to trust God’s plan, even when it didn’t align with their own understanding.
This perspective was especially important during the moments when prayers didn’t seem to "work." There were seasons in their lives when they cried out to God for answers and healing, only to be met with silence—or outcomes far different from what they had hoped for. These moments of waiting, disappointment, and questioning tested their faith. Yet they remembered their purpose: to pass down a legacy of faith to their children and the people they served. That purpose gave them the strength to endure, even when their prayers seemed unanswered.
What God said in Isaiah 55:8-9 became their anchor: “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways.” God’s plans and timing often didn’t make sense to Sterling and Jean, but they held onto the truth that His ways were higher than theirs. They chose to trust that even when they couldn’t see the answers they longed for, God was still at work, weaving His perfect will into their story.
Remembering their legacy gave the Millers a sense of hope and purpose in the face of trials. Sterling often told his children that faith isn’t just about the results we see; it’s about the perseverance we show in trusting God’s promises. First Corinthians 1:7 reminded them that God had already equipped them with everything they needed as they waited for His plans to unfold. They leaned into His Word, trusted His faithfulness, and encouraged their children to do the same.
When prayers seem unanswered, it can be tempting to feel forgotten by God or to lose sight of His promises. But as the Millers’ story illustrates, it’s often in these moments of silence that we have the greatest opportunity to pass down a legacy of faith. By trusting God’s higher ways, holding onto His promises, and persevering in faith, we leave behind a testimony that speaks to His unchanging goodness.
Take time today to reflect on the legacy you’re building. How can you model trust in God’s promises, even when prayers go unanswered, or life doesn’t unfold as expected? Pray for the strength to lean into His plans, trusting that His ways are higher than yours and His timing is always perfect. Let your faith be a light to others, showing them what it means to live with hope, perseverance, and purpose.
God’s promises never fail, even when we don’t see the answers we expect. By keeping your eyes on Him and remembering the legacy you want to leave, you can find strength to endure every trial and joy in knowing that your faith is planting seeds for generations to come. Trust Him with your prayers, your purpose, and your legacy, knowing that He is always faithful.
