Death threat gratitude
Can you imagine being ripped apart by lions? Daniel must have had that thought after his enemies passed a law that promised a short stay in a lions’ den for anyone who prayed to God. Would it end quickly with teeth to the throat? Would the big cats slash open and chew on his still-living body?
I’m amazed at Daniel’s reaction: “When Daniel learned that the decree had been published, he went home to his upstairs room where the windows opened toward Jerusalem. Three times a day he got down on his knees and prayed, giving thanks to his God, just as he had done before” (Daniel 6:10).
What did Daniel change when his life was on the line? Nothing. He prayed three times a day in front of his open windows (a place where everyone could see him with multiple opportunities to get caught!). And he gave thanks! What?! Daniel knew the character of his God. He believed God was his personal Father (“his God”); that because of his forgiveness and love, he was so connected to God; that no other god could save like the Lord. That’s why he was grateful that he knew God, no matter what it cost him.
Whatever the world threatens to do to you, remember the character of God. He is the only One who loves you unconditionally, who shows up constantly, and who will save you eternally. He’s the only One who would send his only Son so you could become his beloved child.
That kind of faith will keep you faithful and grateful like Daniel.
