Fighting for Freedom
Written by Jo-Anne Meekins
Philippians 4 verse 13 says, “I can do all this through [Christ] who gives me strength.”
Being illiterate and suffering a head injury that caused sudden erratic sleeping spells did not discourage Harriet Tubman from leading many enslaved people to freedom. During the spells, Tubman experienced dreams and visions that fortified her faith and guided her along as she repeatedly risked her life and freedom for her family, friends, and others.
Like the prayer warrior Tubman was, I can imagine her crying out to God, “I can do all this through [Christ] who gives me strength.” Through her prayers and acts of faith, Tubman’s seeming weakness became her strength. She even says that God used her sleeping spells to impart major, life-changing instructions. The fact that she avoided capture and never lost a passenger during her years serving as an Underground Railroad “conductor” is a testament to Tubman’s faith and strength in God as well as His faithfulness to her.
We may experience pain and weakness from life’s circumstances, but in God’s Word, He promises to give us strength to endure. Just like Paul, a servant often in chains, confidently and hopefully states that with God he can do all things, today, we can declare this truth to escape bondage and help others do the same. The Holy Spirit, our Comforter, Intercessor, Teacher, and Helper, is always with us, and He has also equipped us to finish our work victoriously.
What has God freed you from? How can you help free others?
Let’s pray.
Father, thank You for my measure of faith. Help me bless others as You have blessed me.
Amen.
