Vocational Wellbeing
Our vocational wellbeing is crucial. Research reveals that feeling purposeless increases the risk of depression, suicidal thoughts, poor relationships, and substance abuse. Conversely, a strong sense of purpose tends to increase physical and mental wellbeing.
You have an overall life purpose common to us all and a specific pathway unique to you. In target-shooting terms, finding your overall purpose is like hitting the right target, and discovering your unique pathway is like hitting the bullseye. The target is surrendering your life to Jesus. The bullseye is your particular calling.
Elijah lived with a healthy awareness of his overall God-centred purpose. He knew his purpose came from being in relationship with and serving God. Of course, his specific purpose was being a prophet to God’s people. Your unique purpose will become clearer to you as you go on a journey of self-assessment, experimentation, consultation with trusted others, and seeking God’s guidance.
Even when we’ve discovered the unique pathway God has for us, it’s still possible for us to lose our way, as Elijah did. But when Elijah had pretty much given up, God showed that He wasn’t done with him. Having begun to revive Elijah physically, emotionally, and spiritually, God reaffirmed his calling with the simple, powerful instruction: ‘Go back the way you came…’ God wasn’t telling Elijah to retrace his steps geographically but to go back to his original vocation. If you’re feeling confused about your calling, or you’ve lost focus and motivation, don’t quit! Recall the last thing God said to you. If God hasn’t made a next step clear, continue being obedient in what He’s already called you to. Or consider whether God is reaffirming your original vocational calling but with a new assignment.
As Christians, we have an added vital component of vocational wellbeing: the Holy Spirit, who empowers us to fulfil our God-given purpose. The power of God on display in Elijah’s life led Elisha, his protégé, to ask God for a double portion of His Spirit. He asked, received, and went on to do even greater miracles than his master. Ask God to anoint you for your vocation. He knows how vulnerable you are and how much you need His power. Also, learn from Elijah that doing life and ministry with others is far healthier than trying to go it alone.
If we put our trust in God, He promises we’ll receive a reward for faithful (if sometimes faltering) service. We don’t get everything we desire in this life, and our work can be tough in this imperfect world. However, as we live life well and stay true to our God-given vocation, we’re storing up great rewards in eternity, where we will enjoy perfect wellbeing. Ask God for wisdom and strength to address the areas of your wellbeing that need attention, then consider your next steps and how you can make yourself accountable to trusted friends. May your risen Redeemer and Prince of Peace fill you with His Spirit and may you know increased wellbeing in every area of your life.
