Following the God Who TransformsНамуна
Read: Psalm 139:13–18
13 For you created my inmost being. You knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful. I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand — when I awake, I am still with you. Praise the LORD.
The God Who Knits
Several pictures may come to mind when you think of God. But did you ever think of God sitting on a rocking chair with a knitting needle in hand? You might object that God has more important things to do than work on a craft project. But the psalmist gives us an intimate portrait of God paying attention to our development in our mother’s womb even before we had 10 fingers and 10 toes, when we were no bigger than a thimble. And you know that when God is the artist, his creation is going to be something extraordinarily beautiful.
What a tragedy, then, that so many young lives are snuffed out even before they are born. And that so many children are stunted by malnutrition, abuse and neglect. So many who are elderly, sick or living with disabilities feel lonely and abandoned.
God sees each human life as precious, and he expects us to share in his excitement about the unique potential of each child who comes into the world. God wants us to choose life for ourselves, for our families, and for every human being on the planet, at each stage of life from cradle to grave, whatever their challenges. Today, thank God for the gift of life.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, you created us in love, and you have great plans for us. Help us to honor and protect the precious gift of life. Open our eyes to see the beauty in each person we meet today, especially those who are vulnerable or struggling. Make us a blessing today as we serve you and others.
