Following Jesus in Nursing: A Daily Devotional for CaregiversНамуна
Take one minute, and breathe in and out slowly. Ask Jesus to make his presence known to you. As a nurse, your work reflects God’s caregiver nature. Take a moment today to reflect on the impact you have made in the lives of your patients.
Suspected stroke with aphasia. A farm worker's linens were covered with dirt from the fields. I approached him with a basin of warm water, soap, and towels. “Would you like to clean up a bit?” I asked. He nodded. He helped as much as he could. I emptied the dirty water several times. His feet needed extra time as I washed layers of dirt off his feet. Smiling, I said, “My grandmother always told me I’d sleep better if I had clean feet. I don’t know if that’s true, but she was pretty insistent about it.” Looking at him face-to-face, I asked, “Better?” He nodded his head as a tear rolled down his cheek. I have not forgotten this man over the 40-plus years of my experience as a nurse. The power of being seen. The value of respect, connection, and the common humanity we share. The simple ways I can demonstrate God’s love in my care. It happens in small but significant ways - even the washing of feet. --Grateful for you, Christy
Have you ever had to care for someone with a condition that repulsed you or made you uneasy? How did you feel about touching or getting close to them? How can you express care through the gift of your words, touch, or presence this week?
Dear Jesus, thank you for your care for me. Help me feel you with me today. Help me care well for others today in your strength. Amen.
