Sin: Original Sin
Read: Romans 5:12-21
SOAP: Romans 5:12; Romans 5:17
“So then, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin, and so death spread to all people because all sinned—” Romans 5:12
“For if, by the transgression of the one man, death reigned through the one, how much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one, Jesus Christ!” Romans 5:17
Into the Text
The doctrine of original sin explains that human sin and death originated from Adam's transgression. Romans 5:12 takes us back to the very beginning, to Adam and Eve's disobedience in the Garden of Eden. Their disobedience brought sin and death into the world. As a result, we have all inherited a sinful nature. From the very start of our lives, we have a bent towards sin, wanting to do our own thing rather than living for and obeying our Creator.
Thankfully, the story doesn't end there. While Adam's sin brought death, Romans 5:17 offers a message of hope. It reminds us that although sin entered the world through Adam, grace, and life have come through Jesus Christ.
In our daily lives, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by our imperfections and mistakes. We continue to struggle with the same old sinful patterns. But that's the beauty of God's grace—it's not something we can earn. Jesus, the sinless one, took on our sins and gave us His righteousness. When we trust in Him, our old, sinful nature is put to death (Romans 6:6). We are made new and given new hearts (Ezekiel 36:26). This is not just a theological concept but a personal reality.
Imagine the freedom this brings! The curse of sin no longer binds us. Instead, we have been given a new nature, one that wants to do God’s will. In our daily battle with sin, we need to remember that Jesus will forgive us and empower us to do what is right. We just need to ask Him.
Prayer
Dear Jesus, thank you for paying the penalty for my sins. Help me grasp the depth of your grace and fully trust in your empowering righteousness. Thank You for freeing me from the curse of sin and making me righteous in your sight. In your name, Amen.
