Week 2: The Character of God
The Character of God
Isaiah 9:6 is often used during the Christmas season. This prophecy by the prophet Isaiah in the Old Testament foretold the birth and life of Jesus, the Messiah. We see in this verse that there are four things Jesus will be “called” as the Messiah: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace.
These four titles are the names of Jesus, the physical representation of God. However, they also represent God’s character, one of the most important things we must understand as believers in Jesus. This week is dedicated to learning more about the character of God.
The way we view God’s character determines the way we see God. “Character” is defined by the Oxford Dictionary as “the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual.” In other words, God’s character (His qualities) distinguishes who He is.
2 Samuel 7:22 says, “How great you are, O Sovereign Lord! There is no one like you. We have never even heard of another God like you!” Our God is distinguished. There has never been anyone like Him; there is no one like Him, and there will never be anyone like Him. When we can grasp the reality of the character of God, we will truly understand the heart of God. When we understand His heart, we know who He is!
