5 Spiritual Practices for Healing and Transformation

DAY 4 OF 5

Scripting (Writing)

Every day, we are bombarded with positive and negative thoughts that speak to who we are and our state of being at any given moment. Depending on the circumstance, identifying which ones to focus on can be a real challenge if we are not intentional about doing so. In Philippians 4:8, Paul instructs us to be intentional about our thoughts by choosing to dwell on true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, or praiseworthy things.

Since thoughts can be fleeting and all mixed up with any number of competing ideas, we are also encouraged to write down the things God places before us. We see this in Habakkuk 2:2 when the Prophet Habakkuk was told to write down God's vision concerning the destruction of Babylon. The purpose was so that those who read it could not only align with God’s plan but swiftly carry it out. That same instruction can also apply to the life-giving thoughts and visions God places on our hearts so we may consistently align with God’s will.

Selectively focusing on what God says can be incredibly difficult when life, our spouse, our kids, well-meaning friends, and even our circumstances are saying something different. Taking time to write out what God is saying helps us to focus on those things and remain in a place of expectancy concerning what God says he will do.

Spiritual Practice #4

SCRIPTING (WRITING)

Have you taken the time to write out what God has placed on your heart concerning your life? Have you even asked him for his plan? God’s Word promises that he will give us the desires of our heart when we delight ourselves in him (Psalm 37:4). However, we must first ask him to show us the desires he’s placed there and then be willing to write them down, make them plain, and be ready to run with them as the Holy Spirit leads.

Challenge: Take a moment to watch this short video about the power of intentional journaling as a spiritual practice. Then, be prepared to write down what God shows you over the coming days, weeks, and even months.
