Freedom

DAY 7 OF 7

No longer a slave

What an interesting verse to find in the Bible! This concept symbolises a period of completion and divine perfection. The number 7 in the Bible represents completeness, as seen in creation where God rested on the seventh day, signifying the fulfilment of His work. This pattern of six days or years followed by a seventh of rest or release reflects God’s order in creation and redemption.

This ancient rule looks forward to the ultimate freedom we receive through Christ. Just as the Hebrew servant was released in the seventh year, Jesus, through His death and resurrection, offers spiritual freedom from the bondage of sin and the law. The ‘seventh year’ can be seen as symbolic of the spiritual rest and completeness found in Christ where we are no longer slaves to sin but are free to live in the grace of God.

It doesn’t end there. The release of the servant in the seventh year foreshadows the ultimate rest and liberation that Christ provides. God’s timing and plan for redemption are perfect and complete, with Jesus being the fulfilment of the law. The seventh year also points to the eternal rest promised to us in heaven where we’ll experience the fullness of God’s freedom and peace.

Exodus 21:2 not only established a social and moral order for ancient Israel but also carries a deeper theological significance. It foreshadows the perfect freedom and rest that’s realised in Jesus Christ, emphasising the completion of God’s redemptive work and the ultimate freedom He offers us. Thank you God for setting us free!
