Wisdom to discern
“… wisdom to know the difference …”
In this devotional, we reflect on the importance of discerning between what we must accept and what we should have the courage to change. As discussed earlier, serenity is the inner peace that comes from trusting God, regardless of external circumstances. This peace is the fruit of the Holy Spirit working within us.
We understand that there are things in life we cannot change, and we need God’s grace to accept them. When the apostle Paul asked God to remove the thorn in his flesh, the response was: “My grace is sufficient for you” (2 Corinthians 12:9). This teaches us that, often, it’s not about removing difficulties but about depending on divine grace.
On the other hand, there are situations where God calls us to have the courage to change. In the previous devotional, we saw David facing Goliath. David saw in God the strength to defeat the giant, while fear paralyzed others. Courage to change isn’t about facing what’s easy but believing that, with God, even the impossible can be transformed.
Here is where wisdom to discern comes in. We need to identify what should be changed and what should be accepted. The question is what can be changed and what should be changed according to God’s will. The Bible teaches us that God’s will is good, perfect, and pleasing (Romans 12:2) and that we should strive to live a life of holiness.
Finally, we must ask God for the wisdom to recognize what He desires for our lives. As Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” When sought and embraced, this wisdom becomes our guiding light, helping us make decisions aligned with God’s purpose, accepting with serenity what cannot be changed, and moving forward with courage in what must be transformed.
Prayer: Lord, teach me how to handle the challenges and difficulties I face each day. May I recognize that each day has its troubles but that You are with me to carry my burdens. Help me not to fear the future but to trust in Your faithful love. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
About this Plan
The Serenity Prayer connects Christian teachings to life's challenges. Although not directly found in the Bible, its principles have biblical support. Used by groups like the Twelve Steps, the prayer offers serenity to accept what cannot be changed, courage to change what is possible, and wisdom to distinguish between the two, making it essential in our journey of transformation and restoration.
