Martha: Service with Love
READ LUKE 10:38–42
Martha’s heart for hospitality was undeniable as she welcomed Jesus into her home with great care and diligence. Yet, amidst her busyness, she became distracted and anxious about the details, losing sight of the true blessing in her midst–Jesus Himself. In her frustration, Martha pleaded with Jesus to rebuke Mary for not helping with the tasks. However, Jesus gently redirected her focus, reminding her that Mary had chosen wisely by sitting at His feet, soaking in His words.
How often do we, like Martha, get caught up in the busyness of serving Jesus that we miss the opportunity to simply be with Him? Jesus’ words to Martha are a gentle invitation to prioritize relationship over tasks, reminding us that spending time in His presence is the one thing that truly matters because it’s out of the overflow of our intimate relationship with Him that the river of love and grace flow.
Let’s learn from Martha’s experience. As we serve Jesus and others, may we also cultivate moments to sit at His feet, allowing His presence to calm our anxieties and refresh our spirits. In doing so, we discover that the greatest joy and fulfilment come from knowing and being with Jesus, who offers us rest and peace in every season of life.
