Names of Christ: An Advent DevotionНамуна
The Light of the World
One of Jesus's names is Light of the World. Here’s a thought that might leave you awestruck, too: the very One who spoke, “Let there be light,” is Himself the Light of the World. Think about that.
Light is such an amazing thing. It’s a symbol of celebration. Every time we have a birthday, we light candles. Fourth of July, we light fireworks into the sky all around us. Christmas, everything is wrapped in lights. It’s one of the things that I love the most about Christmas. And I often think that as I see lights sparkling everywhere, even people who don’t recognize Jesus as the Light of the World are turning on lights. There’s a sense of anticipation in Christmastime that says something special is about to happen.
When the One who created light is the Light of the World and then offers to put that light into us, what a miracle that is—He lives within us.
I think of that song that says, “Light of the world, You stepped down out of darkness.” And, “He opened my eyes. Let me see.” He does that for each and every one of us open to that. That miracle of the light, the Light of the World, is in me!
And then I think of the Scripture that says darkness cannot overcome the light, that the light will always be able to shine through it—that darkness can never extinguish it (John 1:5).
So, think about the miracle of that for you and for me. The Light that cannot be extinguished... That Light carries with it celebration. That Light carries with it truth. That Light is the Creator of all that resides in you and me. What a miracle. The Light of the World came to rest in each and every one of us.
