WHY SHOULD I BE A DISCIPLE? Why you should get a mentor and join a discipleship group

Have you ever tried to do something new and struggled to figure it out? Maybe it was a game, a sport, a lesson at school, cooking, or a special skill. Then, someone else who has experience doing that very thing comes to help and it all starts making sense! I remember a time when I tried to follow Jesus on my own. I believed I didn’t need community to strengthen my faith with Jesus or to challenge me in areas I had become complacent in. I would go to Youth Camp each year and be on fire for God but then return home and slowly fall back into the normal way of life - trying to grow on my own. It was very slow and very difficult! It wasn’t until I allowed leaders and friends to speak into my life, pray for me, encourage me, and hold me accountable, that I realised what I was missing out on. We aren’t meant to live our spiritual lives in isolation!

The church was established by Jesus to bring His people together to sharpen one another and walk closer with God. While we are first and foremost disciples of Jesus, spiritual leaders help us to be consistent in our relationship with Him. Leaders point us towards the Holy Spirit’s guidance and the love of our Heavenly Father. The community we place ourselves in should lead us closer to Jesus and His will for our lives. After all, there’s nobody better to follow than Jesus!

When returning home from camp, it can be hard to keep pursuing God. It can even feel like the fire you had at camp is starting to go out, but the best thing you can do is put yourself in a faith-based community! Your youth ministry has leaders who love you and want the very best for you. We know they would be thrilled to help lead you closer to Jesus!

Perhaps today is the day to ask one of them to catch up or ask your pastor if there is a small group you can join. Don’t do life alone. Watch your relationship with Jesus grow as you step into the community that God has provided for you!
