AS A MAN THINKETH IN HIS HEART SO IS HE

The nurse on duty that night in the ER seemed okay, but I noticed at first that he wasn’t as friendly as the rest of the staff (or that was what my mind was telling me).

He tried several veins and one blew out trying to take labs. As the needle seemed to go further my thoughts about the nurse were not God’s thoughts. I had formed an opinion about him without truly knowing him. My entire mindset and focus was on him and his intentions.

My youngest daughter was present, and she even asked him why he had to take the blood from that part of my hand. I heard his explanation, yet my opinion had already been formed.

My daughter had called my son and soon he too was in the hospital room. He began conversing with the nurse, and suddenly the nurse’s demeanor seemed to change. He began laughing at things, and it seemed he was being more careful.

“As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he” in Proverbs 23:7

Instantly the proverb above came into my mind. Five people in the room—the doctor, the nurse, my daughter, my son, and myself—and no one present except me, knew that God was dealing with my heart. God used this nurse and the experience to show me a dark side. I had allowed my fears, my discomfort, and my pain to dictate my thoughts about a man I did not know. Over and over the verse ran through my mind. My thoughts weren’t valid, and God showed me what I had allowed to get into my heart in that moment. In my spirit, I was asking God to forgive me and thanking Him for using this situation to show me a huge flaw. Not only was I wrong about the MRI and the nurse, but the doctor came in with discharge papers! I would not be readmitted! All this fuss and for what?

I can’t help but ask myself, how many other times do we Christians allow our feelings to get in the way of our faith.

PRAYER: Thank You, Lord! Sometimes You have to use our discomforts to show us our flaws. Thank You for forgiveness, and yes, Lord, thank you for the nurse that I had so wrongfully misjudged. In Jesus’ Name. Amen
