Build a Better Marriage by Building a Biblical PerspectiveНамуна
Once you begin to pay more attention to the thoughts you think, it might seem to become harder to change them than before. Increased awareness is the first step toward re-patterning, but it’s also uncomfortable to be confronted with the reality of how deeply ingrained the patterns are.
Do not become discouraged if you notice more awareness. When those pricking thoughts pierce your mind, follow the instruction in Colossians 4:2 to “Devote yourselves to prayer with an alert mind and a thankful heart.”
Think of that one-degree-at-a-time transformation we read about in 2 Corinthians 3:18. One degree doesn’t seem like that much when you’ve moving, but over time, it will change your course entirely.
We are assured in Philippians 1:6 that God is faithful to complete the good works He sets in motion. He is faithful, and in continued dependence on Him, you will see his work of sanctifying change.
Even if you’re working on a healthy perspective alone and your spouse isn’t on board, it will make you healthier and life more enjoyable. God’s people are called to be thankful people, and a grateful perspective brings more joy than a nitpicky one. Get curious, ask yourself questions like, “where did this thought pattern come from?” “Is this a fact or an assumption?” Pray and ask for God’s help to grow more self aware. Prayer and journaling can help you see what you’re thinking and become more aware of your thought patterns and overall mindset.
Open the conversation with communication and curiosity, not blame. Allow your pricking thoughts of awareness to keep your mind alert to God’s purposes of growing you.
Action steps for you:
- Pray daily to thank God for your spouse and for God to help you see your spouse through His eyes.
- List 5 things you are thankful for today. Pray and thank God for each one specifically.
