The Pac-12 Is Late, But They're In
2020 was unprecedented, with college football conferences going back and forth on whether or not they should play their season.
While many conferences started playing games in September, the Pac-12 was the last Power Five conference to elect to play games, meaning they did not begin competition until November 6th.
At the time, there was plenty of debate regarding whether the Pac-12 should automatically miss out on having a representative in the College Football Playoff solely because it was "late to the party."
In light of that situation, a parable in the Bible provides insight into the kingdom of heaven and the timing of when someone receives salvation. Matthew 20:1-16 tells about Jesus speaking of a landowner who hires workers at different times throughout the day.
When it was time for payment at the end of the day, "each received a full day's wage" – regardless of when they began their day. As a result, the workers who came first weren't happy to be paid the same as those who came last.
The owner then responds in verse 13, "…Friend, I haven't been unfair! Didn't you agree to work all day for the usual wage? Take your money and go. I wanted to pay this last worker the same as you. Is it against the law for me to do what I want with my money? Should you be jealous because I am kind to others?"
This parable points to God's mercy and reminds us that we receive the same grace and salvation regardless of accepting the call to follow Jesus. It's not based on us earning it or doing more than someone else. It's all about grace!
Even when someone follows Jesus for a "shorter season" in life, we must remain thankful that they also receive the wonderful gift of salvation.
None of us deserve the mercy of God, but He generously gives it nonetheless.
I'm Bryce Johnson, and you can UNPACK that!
PRAYER: Heavenly Father, I don't deserve Your grace and mercy. Help me to remain thankful for the salvation You've given me. I pray that today will be the day of salvation for those who don't know You yet. I pray this in the name of Jesus, Amen.
