Encountering the Helper

As a young man, I had a very poor memory that greatly impacted my academic and social life. I failed English in Year 12 and forgot the name of my first girlfriend after six weeks of dating her. I also had difficulty understanding things and comprehending ideas.

All this changed three years later when I had a powerful encounter with God through the power of the Holy Spirit. The encounter was the result of a year-long journey of hungering for a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ.

Jesus took a great deal of time to introduce His disciples to the person and work of the Holy Spirit (John chapters 14–17). In John 14:26, Jesus said that the evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work was to teach us about Jesus and His teachings by helping us remember and grasp those truths as revealed in scripture. This is exactly what happened in my life. It was as though I had emerged from a cocoon. Through encountering the Holy Spirit, God gave me a new heart and a new head. This school dropout eventually graduated from Agricultural College, obtained a Bachelor of Biblical Theology, founded a Christian School, and now preaches and teaches throughout the world.

But this is not just my testimony, it’s the testimony of all who encounter the power of the Holy Spirit, the Helper, sent by Jesus to guide us into all truth (John 16:13). Let’s continue to fully engage with the Holy Spirit in a desire to get to know Jesus better.
