This Too Shall Pass

DAY 4 OF 7

A time for everything

I had two quick thoughts when I read the words ‘this too shall pass’. One was in the voice of Gandalf (for the Lord of the Rings fans) and the other was a silly slogan: ‘This too shall pass. It might pass like a kidney stone, but it will pass.’

These words, ‘this too shall pass’, whilst not from the Bible, are believed to have been from King Solomon. They are words that remind us of the transient nature of life as we reflect on the fact that nothing lasts forever. The writer of Ecclesiastes knew this well as he wrote his famous ‘A time for everything’ poem. It’s a great reminder for us, both when life is going well, and when it’s not; that it will soon all end.

Sometimes endings are painful, heartbreaking, and ones you want to avoid. At other times endings are joyful, hopeful, and ones you long for.

In our post-truth world, there’s not a lot of certainty anymore. We’re all at risk of being tossed this way and that by the evil and deception around us, and even our own sinful nature, as we’re not sure what to invest our time and resources in.

Yet we can be sure of one thing. Jesus’ words are true. ‘Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away’ (Matthew 24:35). So, let’s lean into Him a little more today, as new creations, with the old having passed away, and the new being here. We are reconciled to Him, in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:17). What a joy! Thank you Jesus!

About this Plan

This Too Shall Pass

While these exact words are not found in the Bible, the general message is. Seasons come and go, uncomfortable situations don’t last forever, but be encouraged by the words of Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:17 that say our present troubles are small and won’t last very long! Take heart, read these devotionals and be encouraged that God will be with you always!
