To Save America: The Ten Commandments

DAY 2 OF 10

Many are confused about what the second commandment does, and does not, prohibit. Some who read it come away thinking that Christians should never have any artistic representations of anything. Let’s be clear. This holy statute cannot possibly mean that Christians should not own art or sculptures or carvings in any form. After all, God Himself commanded Moses to fashion golden cherubim for the ark of the covenant.

No, we are not forbidden to make artistic representations of things. We are forbidden to make them an object or instrument of worship.

I know a sweet couple, both devout Christians, who, while visiting a foreign country, purchased a very expensive figurine that had a coiled black snake mounted upon it. They testified that the image of the black snake seemed to bring a strange presence into their home, but they initially shrugged off their discomfort. One morning, they found a living black snake had crawled into their home, located this image, and wrapped itself around the statue. They immediately killed the snake, threw both the statue and the dead snake into the trash, and set it on fire. Instantly, the strange presence they’d felt was gone.

Christian friend, it's time to leave the past behind and move to higher heights. It’s time to forsake all graven images and false gods and instead worship God and God alone.

The apostle Paul said, “Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 3:13–14, NKJV). As for you and your house, serve the Lord and Him only.
