Learn to Say "No!"
My pastor says the word “no” is a complete sentence. Simple, yet so true. Many of us are terrified of letting people down, so we say yes to everything that is asked of us. But it’s important to remember that saying “no” is perfectly acceptable. If you don’t have the bandwidth to take on another task, politely decline, and stick to your decision. Don’t let others make you feel guilty for not doing more than you are able.
Practice saying “no.” Eventually, the guilt feelings will subside. At first it may be awkward, but eventually you will realize the freedom gained from this practice. Don’t harden your heart to this advice. We aren’t built to carry every role in the church or in every organization. There is a strong temptation to fulfill a person’s task list by doing projects for them. When you practice self-care, you will soon gain the courage it takes to recognize your personal boundaries and stand up for your needs. God’s Word says we are not to be slaves to anything! (Galatians 4:7) When you say “no” to something, you’ll be saying “yes” to something better.
We've established that caring for our bodies and souls is essential; God commands us to practice rest and calls us to a life that includes a self-care discipline. Please be careful of denying self-care out of legalism. Instead, the discipline of caring for oneself is a way to honor the Lord with your time. Plus, your soul benefits. Maybe you enjoy reading as a way to practice self-care which is a great habit to regroup and relax. However, if reading comes at the cost of making sure your children are fed, or taking care of someone who depends on you, then neglecting your obligations to engage in self-care has become a selfish pursuit.
It’s also not about selfish ambitions or vain conceits. God has entrusted gifts to you, and He has given you a way to express those gifts so we can influence others, help others, and bless others. Keeping your gifts inside is a selfish thing to do. God wants you to take care of yourself so that you may bless others with the overflow of your soul. And remember, God can’t fill what’s already full. Make room for rest; your soul craves it.

About this Plan
We live in a society that glorifies productivity and self-care. Have you found yourself exhausted or with nothing left at the end of the day? This endless process of production leaves no margin for rest. If the shadow of guilt and shame have cast heavy clouds of darkness over you or if you’re overwhelmed and your soul feels empty, there is a better way.
