David’s Song

During one of his deepest and darkest hours of difficulty, David sang telling us that God is our Shield, our Sustainer, and our Savior in our most dire circumstances. He showed that we should assess our situation honestly, acknowledge God in our hopelessness, ask Him for His help, and announce our praise for Him.

This notion of God being David’s shield is not exclusive to this song of praise. We can see similar expressions in other psalms as well. In Psalm 5, the Lord surrounds us with favor and blessing as a shield. Psalm 9 goes even further to say He is our Refuge, meaning a fortress high between the rocks. Psalm 28 repeats that the Lord is our Strength and our Shield. And we can find other declarations of God surrounding us with strong protection in psalms 84, 91, 115, 119 and 144.

It is interesting to note that, in Psalm 3:7, the declarations of praise that David sings to the Lord are expressed as if they have already happened. In David’s heart, the Lord already had smitten and smashed his enemies. When our situation seems hopeless, we need to connect with what God has already done on our behalf. Jesus has indeed already overcome our enemies. So big was His victory over them that the Bible says He made a public spectacle of them on the cross (Colossians 2:15). This is what faith is all about.

When we think of God as our Sustainer, our thoughts usually drift to bread, water, and the resources we need to live in the marvelous world God has made. But David equates God’s sustenance to opening our eyes to a new day of life.

Jesus is God’s provision for our salvation. His very name means just that – God’s salvation. By faith in His name, we can be saved. He died on a cross for our sins and rose again three days later to give us His righteousness. If we die to the world in Jesus, we can rise to new life in Him also.

Jesus is God’s salvation – now that is music to our ears!

Lord, You are my Shield, my Sustainer, and my Salvation. You have already struck all my enemies on the cheekbone, and You have broken the teeth of the ungodly! Let my voice shout out Your praise!
