The Worthy One by New Life Worship
In John chapter 12, Jesus is at dinner with a man named Lazarus–the same man and friend he had just raised from the dead one chapter before. They are there celebrating with Lazarus's two sisters, Mary and Martha. Martha is preparing and serving the meal, and then in walks Mary.
Mary walks into the room with a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard. Pure nard was imported from India and cost 300 silver denari which, at that time, was a year’s wage. It was very costly and probably Mary’s greatest earthly possession.
She takes that perfume out of an alabaster jar that she’s holding in her hands and she pours all of it onto the feet of Jesus and then lets her hair down, using it to wipe his feet. It says the whole house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume; the fragrance of pure worship.
This story is all about what pure devotion and extravagant worship to Jesus can look like.
There’s this amazing quote by Charles Spurgeon who said:
“You must sit at His feet, or you will never anoint them. He must pour His divine teaching into you, or you will never pour out a precious ointment upon Him.”
Knowing and being known by the Worthy One is the greatest treasure and prize you will ever receive. When we really know this Jesus—this beautiful lamb of God who gave everything for us–how can we not give everything to him? All of our worship, our devotion—our love—no matter what it costs us, no matter what people may think.
Friends, we may not have perfume or oil to physically pour on to Jesus, but what do we have to bless the heart of God today?
We have our love, we have our gratitude, our thanks for what He has done. We have our devotion. We have our hearts. We have the time of our daily lives to pause and bless Jesus and tell him how much we love Him.
Maybe before you start your day, recount the things he has done in your life, and give him thanks.
Maybe as you're driving in your car, turn your attention towards Jesus and just talk to him. Oh how he longs to commune with you and I, to hear from us.
Maybe get outside into the beauty of this world that he has created and read his word and let it stir your affections and love for Jesus.
Maybe turn on a worship song and sing to him or pray the words of the song. You don’t have to just sing or worship on a Sunday, but you can do it anytime, anywhere.
