WHY PSALM 136?

Psalm 136 is a celebration psalm! It’s all about giving thanks for God’s work in the Israelite's past, present, and future.

You’ll notice that a phrase is repeated in each verse: “his faithful love endures forever”. Just imagine the power of this phrase repeated by hundreds of people gathered in one room. God is faithful, he loves us, and his love endures beyond temporary moments like human love sometimes does. That’s what this psalm is really trying to get us to understand.

VITAL VERSE

"His faithful love endures forever"

When you repeat something, you want what you repeat to be at the front of the person's mind... the vital verse is obvious in this psalm!

SUB SKILL: 'WHY' WEBS

Asking “Why?” takes us deeper and stretches our minds further! Just like a spider spinning their web, we can ask God the “why” question.

Why Webs help us to unpack a passage that we encounter in our daily double. Sometimes we won’t have the answer to the question. That’s ok! But continuing to web together answers to the why question usually creates a strong and beautiful understanding that helps us grow as Christians.

SOLO GO: CREATE A WHY WEB FOR VITAL VERSES

Take out your journal and write down the vital verse. Ask yourself the why question and think about how you would answer it if somebody asked you “why” or “why do you believe that is true?”

For example (with today’s vital verse): His faithful love endures forever.

Why?
Because he forgives me from my sin even though I don’t deserve it

Why?
Because he is a compassionate God

Why?
Because he didn’t have to help me but chose to save me through Jesus

Why? ...

PRESENCE PRAYERS

Presence prayers are prayers that invite God’s presence into the moment. It’s a bit like calling your sibling into your room. They are with you in the house, just like God’s Spirit is with us every day! But you are acknowledging and wanting their presence to be close to you when you ask them to come into your room.

Every moment of the day – we can ask God for His presence. And boy is it awesome! The most stressful situations can become peaceful when we ask for God’s presence to be felt. Be with God today. Invite Him into your moment as you finish your daily double.
