Finding Your Light
Scripture: Matthew 5:14
In theatrical terms, “finding your light” means that the performers sense the exact location of the light onstage and naturally adjust themselves until they are standing in it.
Finding your light is a critical skill for any performer, because light tells the audience where to turn their attention. Light says, “That moment—that moment right there—needs to be seen.”
During rehearsals, calls of “Can you feel the light?” and director notes of “Make sure you find your light” are heard often. Sometimes a tech run will be stopped as a performer builds in internal cues, helping her find her light. Performers understand that they are not responsible to create the light, but they are responsible for finding it.
When an actor is “out of her light,” she makes small adjustments until she finds it again, feeling the hottest part of the light is focused right where it is supposed to be. The actor works hard to fully inhabit the light so that nothing obscures the story. Being seen, in this case, actually serves something bigger than the actor.
On a spiritual level, we need to learn to sense when we are operating in a sphere of God’s illumination. When we sense God’s whisper saying, “That place right there—I’ve given you a voice that will carry weight, if you’ll dare to use it. I’ve given you a particular place to shine.”
Friends, it’s time to radiate for God’s glory, to bravely step out onto the God-stages he has ordained for us. It’s time to find our light.
This isn’t about adding one more thing to the to-do list. In fact, it may be about scratching a great many things off the to-do list so that there is sacred space to listen to the lover of your soul when he says, “That dim place, daughter—I’ve assigned that place to you. Time to light it up!” A place where our God-infused lives are saying: This is important. Pay attention. Watch what God is saying here!
Finding your light on stage is critical for the show. And finding your light in Christ is critical for the kingdom. See where God is leading you. And get ready to shine!
In what dim place is God calling you to shine? How is Jesus leading you there himself?

About this Plan
Ever feel tired of pretending to be someone you’re not? Even though I spent much of my life acting on stage, in real life, the pressure to perform became exhausting. I wonder if, like me, you’re eager to drop the daily “brave act.” Are you eager to inhabit the light of God’s role for you? My hope is that these words will become God’s clarion call to your heart, inviting you to shine for the glory of the Bright Morning Star.
