Where Am I Going?: A Study in Proverbs

DAY 5 OF 5

Look where you’re going!

Proverbs has quite a bit to say about the path we are on. At least 29 times Proverbs mentions our journey in life, and we’ve seen that Proverbs teaches us a

  • Travel Truth: Your direction determines your destination.
  • An Attention Axiom: You get to choose what captures your attention.

That’s not all Proverbs offers us, though. It also teaches this Focus Fact: Your attention determines your direction.

This Focus Fact is why every state in the nation has laws prohibiting people from talking on cell phones without some sort of hands-free device. Because when a person is giving more attention to their phone than to the road, there’s a good chance they’ll steer themselves OFF the road…or into somebody else on the road.

Solomon offers a solution to distracted driving and preoccupied path-walking: “Let your eyes look straight ahead, fix your gaze directly before you. Make level paths for your feet and take only ways that are firm. Do not swerve to the right or the left; keep your foot from evil” (Proverbs 4:25-27).

Your destination is determined by your direction, and your direction is dictated by whatever holds your attention.

The good news Solomon offers us is that we get to choose what captures our attention. There are many things vying for your attention, BUT you get to determine what actually captures your attention. YOU decide where your focus is going to be, and the decision you make will determine the direction of your path.

Paths worth being on and paths pretending to be worth being on have this in common: At your entrance to the path, there is something powerful and emotionally engaging that captures your attention. God understands that which is why Solomon warns you to let your eyes look straight ahead.

The writer of Hebrews said it like this: “Fix your eyes on Jesus..” (Hebrews 12:1-3).

You get to choose what gets your attention, and whatever has your attention will determine your direction, which will in turn determine your destination.

I’d like to invite you to explore a path that thousands of people have said helped them experience more of God working IN them and THROUGH them. Click here for more information: https://www.groundwire.net/coaching
