Parenting the Child That Challenges You (And the Other One)

DAY 2 OF 7

His Word

I love the Word of God! For me, it holds so much practical wisdom for almost any area of life. I am literally amazed at how I have been able to read it now for over 40 years, and it still teaches me daily.

Parenting is something you will need wisdom on almost daily. I remember countless times asking the Lord, and He would answer me through scripture.

As a parent, if you are not disciplined in your life, it will be a challenge to give your child something you don’t possess yourself. It’s imperative that you have a quiet time to get in the presence of God, worship Him, and read the Word. Preferably daily because, as you know, as a parent, you never truly know what could happen in a day.

Any day can require faith, patience, knowing when not to speak what’s in your mind, wisdom, and kindness. Those fruits of the Spirit can be plucked clean by breakfast, so you absolutely want to have His presence and His Word in your daily life. Whatever you do daily, you become better at it, and getting wisdom is so important.

I will never forget the first scripture that jumped off the page of the Bible when I first got saved. That scripture was Proverbs 4:7, “Wisdom is the principle thing, therefore get wisdom and with all thy getting get understanding.”

The pursuit of God and the discipline of reading His Word in parenting is priceless. Never forsake the important for the immediate. Parenting can keep you feeling overwhelmed and legitimately busy. However, you must refuel yourself to be the best parent you can be for each child, yourself, and your spouse.

Our children, like it or not, catch our priorities. If they see and experience our pursuit priorities, they will be more likely to join you when you ask them to pursue God and His Word.

Questions:

1. How often do you actually read and let the Word of God in your heart?

2. Where can you create time for the presence and the Word of God in your daily schedule?

3. When did the Word of God help you in parenting so far?
