What Is a Christian?

DAY 1 OF 5

# What Is The Gospel? What makes a Christian a Christian? The most basic answer is The Gospel. When translated, gospel simply means “good news”, or “good telling.” But what is this good news? Well, first we’ll need to understand some bad news. Within the pages of the Bible is told an epic story of an all loving, all powerful, creating God who designed the heavens and Earth, all things living and inanimate. God loved all that He’d created, but what He cherished most was people, for people were designed to rule and reign with God, to worship God and to know Him closer than a brother. Soon after people were created, however, we rebelled against Him, deciding to live life on our own terms. This fractured our relationship with God and by consequence the very essence of our reality, introducing what is called sin. For many, the word “sin” may make you think of “doing something bad”. This is a part of its meaning, however it runs far deeper than this. Rather, sin can be seen as a disease that everyone inherits. With no cure within ourselves, we’d be left hopelessly removed from our God, and abandoned to an ever escalating world of sin that leads to the evils we experience today. However, this is where we find Good News . God was so loving of His people that He sent Himself down as the person of Jesus. The only person to never be infected with sin, however He took the full weight of sin by dying the most gruesome death through crucifixion, and rose again to life on the third day. All the wrongs of our life could then be taken to the cross of Jesus, and also die so that we could have a new life with our creator. Bible reading tip: You may notice some of the text is formatted in red. This is used to indicate the words of Jesus.
