Following Jesus comes at a cost. If we are truly interested in becoming His disciples, then we must accept and agree to His demands. We cannot serve God on our own terms, but on His terms and conditions.

Firstly, we must note that this command to lay aside all and follow him is directed to everybody who seeks to be a genuine follower of Jesus and not just to the first disciples. As believers, we are all called to this life of leaving all to cling to the Master and follow Him diligently. Being a follower of Jesus is not something fashionable to most people because many folks assume that being born again has to do with attending church and doing some activities. As beautiful as these things are, following Jesus is bigger and deeper than that. Therefore, it is highly imperative that we grasp the depth of what it means to follow Jesus.

The Christian life is a call to follow the Lord totally. We are either following or not; the Lord will not permit sitting on the fence. It will cost us everything but it is worth it- the Lord is worth it. I believe that if we see that the Lord is deserving of our lives, we will cling to Him alone.

When we talk about leaving all to follow Jesus, we do not mean that we will cease to have jobs, families, and material things. It means that every other thing begins to find meaning in Jesus; He alone will be the reason we do what we do. He becomes the only treasure of our heart that gives definition and meaning to all things. Our marriages will be to bring Him honor, our jobs to glorify Him, etc. Indeed, in the light of Christ is the true meaning of all things.
