Naomi

In the book of Ruth there was a widow named Naomi. After her husband and two sons died while she was living as a refugee in a foreign land, she came back to her native home, Israel, angry and ready to give up on life. Even the dedication of her daughter-in-law, Ruth, wasn’t enough to keep her from venting her deep hurt to everyone around her. Upon her arrival at her hometown of Bethlehem, the entire town was excited to see her again. But the bitterness had changed her appearance and they questioned if it was even her. Seeing their surprise, she told them to call her Mara, for the Almighty has made life very bitter for me (Ruth 1:20-22). She questioned God, who once had filled her life, and appeared to have lost her faith. She even called her suffering traumatic.

Sometimes, God’s answer comes through people. In this case, God sent the undying devotion of her daughter-in-law, Ruth, when Naomi needed it most. In her unwavering loyalty, Ruth looked after Naomi’s physical needs and repeated words of faith in God. Ruth’s faith was a steadfast example and brought new life to Naomi’s bitterness. Ruth later married Boaz and gave birth to Naomi’s grandson, Obed, who was the father of Jesse and the grandfather of David. Naomi, a central character in the biblical book of Ruth, is depicted as a woman of enduring faith despite facing significant hardships.

While the book of Ruth primarily focuses on Ruth's loyalty to Naomi, Naomi's own faith and resilience are evident. Naomi’s enduring faith trusted in God’s providence and sovereignty. She recognizes God's hand in Ruth's commitment to accompany her back to Bethlehem, acknowledging that it is a demonstration of God's kindness (Ruth 1:6-18). Even in the midst of her sorrow and bitterness, she acknowledges that God has not abandoned her completely. Naomi provides guidance and wisdom to Ruth, advising her on how to navigate their difficult circumstances and ultimately facilitating Ruth's union with Boaz, which leads to the restoration of their family lineage (Ruth 3). She demonstrates her enduring faith in God's ability to bring redemption and restoration (Ruth 4). While Naomi experiences deep grief and hardship, her faith remains resilient throughout the story of Ruth. She exemplifies endurance, trust, and reliance on God's providence, ultimately playing a crucial role in God's unfolding plan of redemption. What a beautiful ending!
