Becoming an Overcomer Намуна
Day 5 Living Free from Stress
1 Peter 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. (NIV)
It’s tough to have a clear understanding of the spiritual realm and live as an overcomer if we don’t learn to give our anxiety to God.
Let's break this down...
The Greek word for cast is, epiriptó - (ep-ir-hrip'-to) I throw (cast) (upon), as of cares.
The Greek word for anxiety is, merimna- (mer'-im-nah) properly, a part, separated from the whole; (figuratively) worry (anxiety), dividing and fracturing a person's being into parts.
When we are constantly worried it fragmented our thinking, and fragmented thinking is the equivalent of being, “scatterbrained.” Living as an overcomer becomes even more challenging with fragmented thinking.
This verse is telling us to throw our anxiety at the feet of Jesus, so He can take it from us and give us a peace that surpasses our ability to understand it (Philippians 4:7), therefore empowering us to make peace here on earth as it is in heaven.
Jesus said this in the Sermon of the Mount, Matthew 6:22 “The lamp of the body is the eye. If therefore your eye is good, your whole body will be full of light.” (NKJV)
Your “eye,” singular, meaning the vision of your mind. And the Greek word for “good,” or other translations use the word “clear,” is, haplous- unfolded, single – literally, "without folds" referring to a single (undivided) focus, i.e. without a (secret) "double agenda" which prevents an over-complicated life (becoming needlessly distracted).
Jesus is saying that when our mind’s vision is clear and healthy, our mind is not fragmented. It makes it easier for us when we remember that God cares for us. The Greek word for "he cares" in 1 Peter 5:7 is, meló- (mel'-o) to care about (be concerned with), especially paying attention (giving thought) to – i.e. "taking an interest.”
God wants us to throw our worries at His feet so we can operate with a singular vision and a clear mind, thus being able to concisely dwell in His peace. When we understand who we are in Him and His love for us living as an overcomer is a natural byproduct.
Worry is the enemy’s plan to make us think that we can’t overcome his schemes, but continually throwing our worry at the feet of God keeps us in peace.
Prayer: Lord, take my worries and grant me a renewed mind.
