Lessons From Deuteronomy

DAY 5 OF 14

Now you know

We are all born outside God’s family. Every new baby already has the terminal disease of sin, and the mortality that hangs over our heads is only the harbinger of a worse fate in hell to come. Spiritual corpses can’t revivify themselves.

God not only needed to come in person as the incarnate second person of the Trinity to purchase your salvation; he needed also to inject your brain and heart with the Holy Spirit so that you could actually come to faith. Everything changed when you became a believer. Now the Word makes sense, now God’s ways look good, now you have spiritual strength to detect Satan’s workings and resist him.

God expects you to use your knowledge, discernment, and spiritual power to recommit to him and choose to follow him. Moses challenged the Israelites: “This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him” (Deuteronomy 30:19,20).

I was once pulled over for speeding 15 mph over the limit. All I could offer the sheriff’s deputy was the excuse that I didn’t know. Pretty lame. I had to pay a hefty fine. When Christ returns to judge the living and the dead, that excuse won’t work for you either.

Now you know. Choose life.
