John, the disciple who outran Peter to the tomb, followed Peter’s crazy faith to see for himself that Jesus had risen. At that moment in his faith, something clicked. Now, the lessons of Jesus and the Scriptures he knew melded into an incredible epiphany: Jesus had to die so that He could defeat death. Until then, they didn’t fully understand what Jesus was doing, but now, the disciples got it.
And what did they do next? The most casual thing ever: They just went home! I envision the dialogue being, “Wow! I mean, can you believe He did it? Crazy, right? Good job, Jesus. Hey, I’m hungry. Wanna go get a sandwich?”
Still, I think there’s something deeper to the disciples going home at this moment. I think they did so with confidence. If Jesus accomplished what He said He did, then there was victory. They didn’t need to wander or worry. Instead, they could rest knowing their Savior fulfilled His promises.
Today, take 20 minutes to sit quietly. Still your mind and think about what Jesus did for you. Ask Him for confidence in His love and promises this week.
