5 Assumptions About God And Why They Are Wrong

DAY 10 OF 15

Just Trust God and Ask Him for Help.

Assumption: God is waiting for me to mess up

This passage gives a great description of God’s heart toward us. It suggests that God is watching over us and waiting for us to ask for his help in the trials of life.

Like most dads, mine was continually correcting me. From my selfish, childish perspective, it looked like he was always finding things wrong with me. He was always on my back, looking over my shoulder. I developed a wrong assumption about my dad’s responses to me, thinking my dad was waiting for me to mess up.

When bad things happen in your life, it’s not necessarily because God is punishing you. More likely, if you are seeking to be his disciple, God is using these difficulties to prepare you for greater things in your life. Through hard circumstances, God will give you something you wouldn’t be able to get on your own. He wants to give you what you need to become a stronger person and Christ follower.

One day, I really did mess up. I messed up my 1961 Thunderbird. I wrecked my pride and joy and I didn’t know where to turn. Then it came to me: my dad would know what to do. I remember having a light-bulb moment. It was an instantaneous attitude adjustment. As a boy, I had misinterpreted and resented my father’s watchful eye. In my moment of need, when I reached out to my dad and trusted him, my eyes were opened. My dad answered the phone, “Good to hear from you, son. What’s going on? Oh, well. Let’s see what we can do.”

When I find myself in a mess, I can either complain, blame God, and journey down the path of doubt and despair, or I can ask God for help and wisdom. It dawned on me one day that we all go through trials, we all mess up, and we all choose to depend on someone for advice or help. I have found that the best companion to have through all these situations is God.

I have come to understand that if God loves me (and he does), and if God’s love is complete (and it is), then anything that happens in my life, positive or negative, happens under the watchful eye of a loving and powerful God. And that is some very good news.
