Jesus Style Leadership 4 - Sent & TeamНамуна
Great Fear and Trembling
Leadership Lesson
Even Jesus-style leaders are sometimes fearful about sharing the gospel. This can be a good thing.
Read 1 Corinthians 2:1–5.
Comment
The author, Paul, was a smart cookie. He had received an excellent education, and he could debate the brightest minds of his day. He drew on a wide range of sources in his letters, showing that he was also well-read. Paul was a confident evangelist who really knew his stuff. Yet, when he went to Corinth for the first time, he was nervous and uncertain. Maybe he was unwell, or maybe he was overwhelmed by the idolatry of the place and the difficulty of getting a hearing. Whatever the reason, Paul saw his weakness as a positive. The Corinthians didn’t turn to Jesus because of Paul’s great speaking or debating skills, but because of the power of God’s Spirit. I find this passage very encouraging. We don’t need to have great confidence and skill to lead people to Jesus. In fact, often the weaker we feel, the more Jesus shows up. We just need to share the gospel and pray for God to do His work. I still feel nervous talking to people about Jesus. I don’t want to mess it up. I often lead an Alpha group with not-yet-Christians. After watching the video, we divide into groups to discuss the content. As the leader, I always feel nervous at that point. Yet Jesus still does His work.
Prayer
Lord, Paul’s personal testimony is so encouraging. He was overwhelmed by the challenge of sharing your good news with the Corinthians. But you showed up, Holy Spirit, and worked in power. I need You to do the same for me. Despite (or maybe through) all my weaknesses and fears, may You use me to share Your good news and lead those I influence to You, Jesus. May You work in power through me.
Personal Reflection
If you feel uncertain or fearful speaking about Jesus with those who are not his followers, take a moment to say that to God. Then give God a chance to help you see this as a strength. Thank Him for Your fears and the desperate need for Jesus they produce.
